|The Christian in Complete Armour, Volume 1
By William Gurnall
This book will be a joy to your soul. We have found a book that is almost too good to be true – except that it is true, meaty and solid, but it is more. It is a delight to read because it comes from the pen of a godly and original thinker, steeped in the Scriptures and able to express mighty truths with an arresting freshness, and frequently with telling wit. Though the book is filled with weighty truth, there isn’t a heavy line anywhere in it.
The book is The Christian in Complete Armour. By the spelling of that last word you would rightly guess that it came from Englad, home of Oswald Chambers, Jessie Penn-Lewis, Major Ian Thomas, Samuel Chadwick, and other luminous writers. William Gurnall, the author of this rediscovered classic, belongs in rank with all of these.
Do not let the fact that you may never have heared his name cheat you out of the joy of reading him. The book was published a while ago – around 1655! – and had continual publication in England for nearly two and a half centuries. It has much more recently been republished in England and now it is available in a faithful and careful paperback abridgement (308 pages and set in exceptionally clear and readable type) with the old style English smoothed into a modern rendering.
John Newton, the famed British preacher and writer of the hymn “Amazing Grace”, wrote: “If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour.
Now you can choose it, too. Even if you can’t read it all now, have it on hand to pick up as you can. The beloved Charles Haddon Spurgeon said of this book: “Gurnall’s work is peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom . . . I have often resorted to it when my own fire has been burning low, and I have seldom failed to find a glowing coal upon Gurnall’s hearth.”
So get a copy for yourself, but share the wealth. Get one or two also as gifts for friends or relatives, a preacher or far-off missionary. It may be exactly the soul-medicine they need.
